​Työvene wins contract for German Navy support vessel

Finnish boatbuilding company Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy has won a contract to design and build a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) crew transfer vessel to support the German Navy in the Baltic Sea.

Specialising in durable workboats, serving the marine, industrial and transport sectors, the company has been contracted by the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In‑Service Support (BAAINBw).

The29m Typhoon-class vessel will be based at Neustadt in Holstein and is intended to support frequent personnel movements between the naval harbour and larger warships at sea. It is being designed to carry up to 60 persons, with seating and deck arrangements configured to allow rapid embarkation and disembarkation in operational conditions.

This SWATH hull form is critical for ship‑to‑ship transfer operations in the Baltic Sea’s typical chop and swell, and a purpose‑designed access and transfer system will be incorporated to allow personnel movements between the PTV and larger naval vessels while both are moving. Structural interfaces and fendering arrangements are being developed to manage relative motions between the two hulls during transfer.

The vessel will be built at Työvene’s Uusikaupunki shipyard in Finland. Delivery is scheduled after the vessel is fabricated, with outfitting, dock trials and open‑water sea trials later in 2026.

Työvene, part of Summa Defence PLC, specialises in aluminium workboats and mission‑specific vessels for government and military use, applying modular design and naval architecture practices to meet performance criteria in challenging maritime environments.
