Pollution matters took centre stage at EMD

The Atlantic Blue Port Services European Interreg Project highlighted a number of important issues for shipping at the recent European Maritime Days which took place in Lisbon, Portugal.

This annual event is organized by the European Commission (Directorate-General of the Sea/DG Mare) to bring together maritime stakeholders for a conference, workshops, exhibition and B2B meetings. This year the event welcomed 1400 participants from 53 countries, one of the most successful EMD’s since its creation in 2008.

The Atlantic Blue Ports project has attracted a number of Portuguese partners, particularly in the region of Lisbon and Setúbal, including ports, the maritime departments DGPM and DGRM of the Portuguese Government, universities and companies including the MARPOL operator Eco-Oil and Bentley systems.

During the European Maritime Days the project organized the following events and activities:

*             Three exhibition stands to promote the three main themes of the project: invasive species, detection (sea water monitoring) and means of prevention (discharge and treatment of ship effluents)

*             A workshop entitled "Invasive species and the IMO ballast water Convention"

*             Demonstrations in the Port of Lisbon of the port-based Ballast Water discharge and Treatment “InvaSave” (1st system being certified by the IMO).
