Ocean Scientific International Ltd (OSIL) has introduced YSI CastAway, a new underwater profiler providing surveyors, oceanographers and hydrologists with instant details of depth, temperature, salinity and sound velocity when immersed from any dock, bridge or boat.

Claimed to be the first of its type, the compact system is simply activated by three taps of a magnetic stylus pen prior to immersion and can then register measurements within minutes. An LCD screen provides ready access for set-up, deployment and immediate data review. Integrated GPS is said to virtually eliminate any necessity for field notes, with the beginning and end of each operation being logged on an internal recorder together with indications of position and time.

Other main features include GIS software for automatic downloads with BlueTooth for presentation of operational data on interactive maps. Analysis, plotting, editing and export of data are intuitive and straightforward. Probes can typically be carried out at depths down to around 100m.
