Damen’s tug shelves have been re-stocked following a 24-vessel delivery from China via the Arctic Route.

Damen’s policy of building vessels for stock often involves construction at its Chinese shipyards for shipment to Europe and recently a consignment of 24 various vessels arrived in Rotterdam for completion and onward sale. Heavyload carrier Tasmanic Winter’s Northern Sea Route voyage involved: ASD Tugs 2411, ASD Tugs 2009, ASD Tugs 3010 ICE, Stan Tugs 1606 and Stan Pontoons 4512 along with some smaller tug models, two Stan Launches 804 and a Multi Cat 1506 making it Damen’s second batch-shipment in 2018.

Purple Water Ltd has joined the list of tug owners demonstrating remotely-controlled operations with its “remote assisted tow” of a 10,000dwt barge from Sicily to Genoa.

Of the total voyage length of 430nm by the double-ended Giano tug, 264nm (62%) were carried out remotely assisted from its “Remote Bridge” location in Naples, hundreds of miles away. Data communication was lost only once for a few minutes when the tug took shelter during the four-day trial and next on the list for Purple Water is development of an automated tug-to-ship connection.

French workboat owner Jifmar Offshore Services has announced its acquisition of the Oban Scotland-based company North West Marine (NWM).

Jifmar operate an impressive fleet of around 20 multipurpose workboats and tugs including a Shoalbuster and this latest acquisition reflects its strategy of relying on locally-established operators to boost its development in France and internationally. Jifmar and NWM have been working together for some time and the significant offshore wind and aquaculture activity in Scottish waters is seen as an area where NWM’s experience locally can offer opportunities to both parties.

Dutch towage service provider Kotug Smit has announced a move from its previous office premises in Rotterdam.

Previously Kotug Smit Holding BV and Kotug Smit Towage Rotterdam BV operated from offices at Wilhelminakade opposite the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal and they have now relocated a short distance to the third floor of Port City 1 at Waalhaven Zuidzijde 21 in Rotterdam. The postal address (PO Box 51046 NL-3007 GA Rotterdam) and phone numbers, both general office and 24/7 operations remain unchanged for Kotug Smit. Port City is a relatively new area of office accommodation that was built on land reclaimed from the vast Waalhaven dock complex.
