Irish boatbuilder, Safehaven Marine’s new Interceptor 38 Pilot/S.A.R. vessel is pictured taking on a huge sea when winds reached force 9 with 10m waves off the coast of Ireland during seakeeping trials.

The vessel may be Safehaven’s smallest pilot vessel, but it has proved to have capabilities way above its size. Frank Kowalski, the vessel’s designer commented: “We were demonstrating the vessel for a customer, it was a particularly bad day with winds reaching force 9 creating 10m waves, but a good day to demonstrate your vessels seakeeping abilities. Seas were particularly large this day and breaking heavily, but the vessel performed superbly in the sometimes challenging conditions.”

It’s ‘self righting’ and capable of recovering after being capsized and as such can be used for search and rescue duties. It features removable outboard safety railings. Whilst spacious forward and aft decks give the vessel multi -role capabilities.

The Interceptor 38 has a LOA of 11.7m and a 4.1m beam and substantial delta fendering all round for protection during boardings. It’s powered by Volvo D9 engines giving a maximum speed of 29 knots and has an operational speed of 23 knots. The design has seating for four pilots and one crew with additional seating for up to six passengers.
