Port Designers Handbook: Recommendations and Guidelines
This book should prove invaluable for practising port and harbour engineersinvolved in the layout, design and construction of berth and harbourstructures.
During his professional career with Norwegian consultants Norconsult AS, author Carl A Thoresen was chief port and harbour engineer and consultant for more than 500 projects worldwide.
Now a lecturer on berth and port structures at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, he also lectures on postgraduate courses arranged by the Norwegian Society of Chartered Engineers.
Driven largely by world trade expansion over the last two decades, a growing interest in the design of port and harbour structures has produced a huge volume of research, technical papers and other information.
Much has been gathered by the International Navigation Association (PIANC), some of which is evaluated and summarised in this title as it examines the main issues and assumptions in the layout, design and construction of modern port structures and the forces and loadings acting upon them.
Superceding the author’s 1988 volume Port Design , this updated effort reflects the latest progress and development in navigation safety, port planning and site selection, layout of container, gas and oil terminals, cargo handling, berth design and construction, use of concrete for berth structures in the marine environment, deterioration and methods of repair, fenders, and mooring principles.
The title also covers evaluation of operational conditions due to impact from wind, wave and current loads on port and berth structures, and berthing and layout criteria for ships in channels and harbour basins.
Equally relevant is the evaluation of the different practices for design and construction of port and berth structures, and recommendations given by the different international harbour standards.
