Portsmouth University courses enhance maritime careers
University of Portsmouth is offering degree apprenticeships which allow students to work as an employee while also studying part-time for a full Bachelors or Masters degree.
A wide range of flexible work-based and distance learning courses are available, including maritime engineering. Courses combine the academic study from a traditional university degree with practical on-the-job experience and employment skills.
Oyadiran Akinyemi Tunmibi, BSc (Hons) Maritime Studies, stated: “One of the major roles of a master on-board is to provide solutions to all kinds of challenges at sea. All of my projects cut across providing solutions to critical challenges in the maritime industry. Not only have I been able to provide solutions to lingering navigational challenges in my company, this journey management has also offered me several opportunities at sea and in ports to act as a master.”
Portsmouth University stressed that degree apprenticeships are a cost-effective way for organisations to attract and retain talented employees, develop their workforce, fill skills gaps and improve their organisation’s performance.
On a degree apprenticeship, apprentices go to university one day a week on day release to learn skills they can apply straight away in an organisation. They also have access to the university’s virtual learning environment, so they can study independently.
