Rembrandt Gives ABP a Portrait of Southampton

The ABP Port of Southampton has become the first port authority to deploy the PC Rembrandt ship handling training simulator developed by British Maritime Technologys subsidiary BMT SeaTech.

Sonardynes new Fusion System featuring integration of acoustics and sensor technology for underwater positioning.

The PC-based real or fast time manoeuvring simulator utilises mathematical models developed by BMT SeaTech which include the effects of water depth, wind and current. BMT SeaTech has tailored the Rembrandt software to suit the specific requirements of the Port of Southampton. The system was designed to simulate a wide range of vessels typical to the port, from tankers, ro-ros and current containerships to the conceptual design of a pending 12,500 teu mega-boxship.

Tugs of the correct size, type and bollard pull, traffic vessels and the use of anchors and mooring lines were incorporated.

Also included is a full set of electronic nautical charts of the Solent area plus the proposed Dibden Terminal development.

Captain James Chestnutt, Harbour Master for the Port of Southampton, said, ‘The advanced software will give the Authority the capability of training for future eventualities, weather conditions, and the inevitable changes in vessel size.

This will help to enhance our ability to manage and monitor the safety of the waterways of the entire district by aiding port risk assessments in accordance with the requirements of the Port Marine Safety Code.’
