Work is getting underway on a ribbon wall fronting a £2.3 million waterfront park on the South Shields riverside in the UK.
The retaining wall at the Harton Quays Park is a curved feature constructed from reinforced earth, faced with 144 decorative precast concrete panels which are 1.2m wide and range in height from 1.5m to 4.5m. With each panel weighing up to 3.7t, Balfour Beatty is using a 35 tonne Terrex Demag AC35 crane to lift the panels into place.
When complete, the park will stretch along the Tyne from South Shields ferry landing to the Customs House and feature curved embankments, amphitheatre, promenade, high specification landscaping and planting including mature trees. Balfour Beatty is also carrying out all earthworks as well as the soft and hard landscaping to develop the park area in South Shields.
Phil Morgan of Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering said: “This is a significant scheme which when complete will transform the waterfront area.”
