The Innovations Showcase awards, sponsored by URICA Early Payment, were presented at the Awards Evening sponsored by ZF Services UK Ltd.

The overall winner of the Spirit of Innovation award: Gobbler Boats – The Gobbler Offshore 290 OSRV is the only craft available where the collected oil is not stored on the vessel, allowing shallow exit of waters and fast escape from flame-outs.

Look under the bed
The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) is now in force. Section 12.4 states that “mattresses must be on a ventilated base”. Currently most bed bases are solid so a costly and time consuming challenge is ahead. Happily Ship Shape IMO (B199) already has a neat solution, used in the leisure sector. Dry-Mat is a ventilation underlay which is pre-cut to go under the mattress. It’s just 10mm thick, ensuring that the mattress will still sit comfortably below the existing fiddles. Director Paul Hallatt says “it’s good to be able to provide such a low cost, immediate solution to a new regulation”.

Dramatic fuel savings
The Voith Linear Jet has demonstrated startling savings in fuel costs – this was the message at Seawork from Voith Turbo (A12). Comparisons between two 21 metre support catamarans, one with Voith Linear jet, the other a water jet produced a one hundred and forty litres an hour saving. A second example produced an 8.84 tonnes

fuel saving on a simulation exercise with a coastguard cutter. Marine Manager, Mark Harvey says, “We believe the Voith Linear Jet is a significant breakthrough in world marine propulsion systems that take the best of two existing technologies – conventional screw propellers and water jets.”

Merging by design
Two of Scotland’s premier design houses, Marine Design International and Ace Marine Ltd, announced their merger on the first day. Simon Cornack, MD of Marine Design and David Gray, naval architect, have joined together under the Marine International Design name and branding, based in Glasgow. The company provides boat design, research and development services.

New and tougher
A new, even tougher version of the Whaly 435 makes its debut at Seawork – the 435 R Professional. The new model is a slightly heavier build than the standard 435 and is aimed at the professional workboat and rescue market. The strengthened transom also takes slightly bigger engines, up to 40hp. Visitors will spot the bright yellow version from afar but distributor Lindon Lewis Marine assures us it is available in other colours…

It’s no turkey!
Gobbler Boats unveiled its new, two-man, 28’ hybrid Rapid Response Oil Spill Vessel (RROSRV), offering a cost-effective, high performance solution for offshore and coastline. Speeds of up to 20 knots are achieved by the high performance, jet propulsion system marine diesel engine. See the vessel in the Seawork Marina.

“Mr Marine” wins Lifetime Achievement Award
Peter Nelmes at ZF Services UK has been awarded the Seawork 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. He started his career at ZF Services in 1995 as a Sales Engineer and has since worked his way up to Marine Business Manager. The citation for the award included these words from his manager, Glenn Ayres “Peter is seen as Mr Marine at ZFS and is deeply embedded in the industry, his customers see him as a friend and he will be sorely missed when he retires at the end of the year.”

New electric fins for cats
Manufacturer Humphree AB (A209) has launched their new SU552 electric stabilising fins that run on DC power. Humphree is the first producer of this fully electric powered fin compatible with the Interceptor system on catamarans. Stefan Faldt, Sales Project Manager, stated, “This is our fifth year at Seawork and it provides good opportunities for us to engage with commercial clients from all over the EU, especially in the offshore wind industry – it’s the best place to be!”

Fastwork at Seawork
The Fastworker 25 is the latest vessel to be designed and built by Coastworker Boats (V56) on the IOW and is launched here in the marina at Seawork. As the name suggests the Fastworker 25 is a fast, stable, & rugged high specification workboat aimed at the offshore industry. Suitable for rapid transfer of personnel or freight, rapid intervention, safety standby or pollution control duties, as well as Harbour patrol duties, offshore fishing, inland river or lake duties. With economical twin 170hp diesel engines the cruising range is 200 miles at 20 knots.

There’s always a celebratory feel to Seawork as pens are put to contracts. The first day of this year’s Seawork was no exception. Burgess Marine signed over the new WFSV, MO2, to Mainprize Offshore Ltd. Sharon Mainprize explained that Burgess had taken over the build after a difficult start and had pulled out all the stops to develop a fantastic vessel. Nick Warren, from Burgess, paid tribute to Mainprize for their part in the development of the support craft. He described Bob and Sharon of Mainprize as “inspirational customers to work with. They know their market and they know what they want.”

Zoning in on a new sponsor
The Marine Travel Company (SB93) is delighted to be sponsoring the Small Business Enterprise Zones. To celebrate they’ll be hosting a drinks reception at 1630 this evening on their stand. Christine Gower said “Do come

and see us. We want to support small businesses to help them become big businesses. We also have a daily business card draw to win a little tipple from our global partners so drop by and see us”.

Three generation exhibiting at Seawork
Ian C Darley (A29), long time exhibitor at Seawork, has been in business for 41 years and now has 3 generations of his family working on the stand. Yesterday they celebrated an exchange of contracts with the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners. Ian is to undertake a feasibility study into a proposed new mooring vessel for operations within the Harbour.

Demon driven to design new range
The Demon Hurricane is in the Innovations Showcase and is designed to work solely on saltwater with galvanised frames and stainless steel pump and fittings. David Walke, Sales Director of Demon International (C5) explained, “It’s a family business, celebrating its 51st year. Exhibiting at Seawork 2014 drove us to design a new range of saltwater pressure washers specifically for the offshore workboat industry.”

Up close to Scania
Visitors to the Scania stand (Q10) were whisked off to the Seawork marina to get up close to a pair of the company’s new DI 13’s. The engines are installed in the Shannon Class lifeboat exhibited by the Berthon

Boat Company which is currently building them.

Seawork’s 3Si Maritime Professional of the Year 2015 is Anne Hornigold of 54 North Maritime. The competition was run via Seawork’s online community, Seaworksocial.com with voting on Seawork’s Facebook pages. Anne beat Ben Metcalf of Landau UK by a narrow margin of 17 likes. Dr Trevor Dobbins and Peter Chalk were also short-listed.
