Nexans Secures €1 billion subsea grid connection project

Nexans has been awarded a €1 billion project under TenneT’s framework agreement, marking a key milestone in the subsea grid connection for offshore wind energy.

The project involves the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) of 250 kilometres of 525 kV High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables using Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) technology. 

“We are proud to secure this project under the TenneT framework agreement for LanWin 2,” said Pascal Radue, EVP of Nexans’ PWR-Transmission Business Group.

“This achievement underscores Nexans’ commitment to delivering innovative subsea cable solutions and reliable execution to advance Europe’s energy transition.”

Better connected

This initiative supports the LanWin 2 offshore grid connection system, which will transmit 2 GW of wind energy from the German North Sea to the mainland, with commissioning set for 2030.

The agreement builds on Nexans’ ongoing partnership with TenneT, following the BalWin3 and LanWin4 projects announced in 2024, reinforcing their shared mission to enhance marine civils infrastructure for renewable energy.

LanWin 2 highlights the pivotal role of grid connections in enabling the large-scale deployment of offshore wind energy, critical to achieving Europe’s renewable energy goals.

Nexans’ innovative cable systems will play a crucial part in transmitting clean energy, promoting sustainability and ensuring energy security in Europe by way of the BritNed cable, a two-way 1,000 MW high-voltage direct current connection which runs from the Isle of Grain (in Kent) to Maasvlakte (near Rotterdam).

The connection is part of a major Anglo-Dutch investment programme to ensure continuing security and diversity of supply and stimulate the use of sustainable electricity.

BritNed Development Ltd is a joint venture of British energy company National Grid and TenneT subsidiary NLink International.
