BUE Viking, operators of the largest standby fleet in the North Sea, has appointed Mr Graham Philip as their new Chief Executive. Mr Philip has been associated with the offshore and towage industries for most of his career and was Managing Director of Cory Towage Ltd. At the time of its takeover by the Wijsmuller Group Holding BV he was appointed to the executive board, and when the company was acquired by the AP Moller Group in 2001 became an executive vice president in Copenhagen.

With effect from the 1 October 2003, marine propulsion specialists Voith Schiffstechnik (Marine Technology) Gmbh & Co will be integrated into the ‘Power Transmission Technology’ division of Voith AG – Voith Turbo Gmbh & Co. Effective from that date the company will trade as Voith Turbo Marine Gmbh & Co.

All other contact details will remain unaffected.

The fire damaged Thames ferry James Newman has been towed away for repairs by the tug Sun Mercia from Adsteam Towage Ltd. One of three identical ferries operated by Transport for London, James Newman serves the cross-river link at Woolwich. The ferry was severely damaged by fire on the evening of Sunday the 13 July when arsonists boarded the vessel alongside the Woolwich depot and started a fire causing extensive damage. Extensive repairs and refurbishment will be carried out at the yard of Richard Engineering and Shiprepair Ltd in Great Yarmouth, after which a further towage operation may be necessary to take the ferry to dry dock.

.Essex based H & S Marine, specialists in marine ploughing and dredging support, have added a third vessel to their fleet of small tug/workboats. Now bearing the name Herman Junior, the vessel is the former En Avant 9 a tug of 15.12m in length powered by a 565bhp Caterpillar. This new acquisition will operate with the tug Herman Sr and a Pushycat 42 workboat. H & S Marine has recently completed an extensive plough dredging task at the former Royal Docks (Docklands) entrance in the Thames and has been contracted to carry out work related to be Thames Gateway project.

From 1 January 2004 the International Salvage Union (ISU) is to admit Associate Members.

Announcing the move ISU President Joop Timmermans said:

‘We hope all organisations and professionals with an interest in salvage will consider Associate Membership of the ISU. We welcome applications from P&I Clubs, other insurers, law firms, ports, national response organisations, shipowners and managers, coastal local authorities, environmental organisations, spill clean-up specialists, surveyors, brokers and others.

The ISU has an active policy of seeking closer co-operation with all users of salvage services, governments and their agencies and others with an interest in salvage. We believe Associate Membership is the best way forward’.
