UKHO award for New Zealand hydrographer
Adam Greenland, National Hydrographer of the governmental Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) organisation in Wellington, is this year’s recipient of the UK Hydrographic Office’s annual Alexander Dalrymple Award for outstanding contributions to world hydrography.
He was presented with the Award by Rear-Admiral Tim Lowe, UK National Hydrographer and deputy chief executive of the UKHO, at a recent reception in London to mark the UK government’s celebration of World Hydrography Day 2017. The Award, he said, was in recognition of Adam’s distinguished contributions to capacity building and significant improvements to maritime safety throughout Southwest Pacific regions. These had involved important training and mentoring initiaves in areas such as maritime safety information in addition to both hydrographic and nautical cartography training on behalf of regional IHO Member States. Other commendable activities have included management of a wide range of national and regional production activities in addition to representing New Zealand on the IHO’s Hydrographic Commissions for Antarctica and South West Pacific regions.
British-born, Adam Greenland joined LINZ in 2005 having at one stage been Deputy Port Hydrographer of the Port of London Authority. He is the the twelth recipient of the prestigious UKHO Dalrymple Award dedicated to the memory of its founder in 1795. Previous recipients include leading hydrographic figures from Chile, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, UK and the US.
