Van Oord Consortium Wins Extension Project
Netherlands based Van Oord has been awarded a contract for the extension of the coal terminal and port basin at the Port of Richards Bay , South Africa. The client is the National Ports Authority of South Africa . The project will be executed in cooperation with several local companies with Van Oords share in the consortium set up to execute the work being 50%.
A massive 10 tonnes of Cementitious Coating 851, a high performance, thixotropic cementitious modified polymer coating, was specified on behalf of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture (MMAA) by engineers, Halcrow International Partnership, assisted by Flexcrete’s exclusive distributor in Doha, Apollo Enterprises. The section of the sea wall coated with 851 is a new extension of the Doha Corniche, which spans an area over 10km long in total and is used by residents as a leisure facility.
The contract has a total value of 29m and was due to get underway at the end of July with a 13 month schedule for completion.
The project involves dredging the turning basin, dredging and reclamation of a new port area, and construction of a 300m long quay wall. Van Oord is responsible for dredging a total quantity of 3 million m 3and reclaiming some 500,000m 3ofsand. The company plans to deploy the trailing suction hopper dredger Lelystad and water injection dredging vessel Jetsed to carry out its share of the work.
