Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSV) has signed a major refit contract with Rossilini’s Four-10 for the vessel refit of REV Ocean, a state-of-the-art ocean research and expedition ship

For DSV, it’s the largest refit project the yard has undertaken to date. The extensive refit includes both interior and exterior enhancements and will take place at DSV’s covered drydock.

“Speaking on behalf of the whole team, we are delighted and proud that Rossilini’s Four-10 have placed their trust in DSV for this momentous and exciting project,” said Michiel de Vliegher, managing director of DSV.

“We’re looking forward to getting stuck into the challenge – the largest project we have undertaken to date – and to bringing it to a successful conclusion in the months ahead.”

Advanced technology

The 194.4-metre vessel will feature advanced laboratories equipped for specimen preservation, analysis and storage.

Cutting-edge acoustic sensors will facilitate seabed mapping down to hadal depths and enable the study of marine life throughout the water column.

Additionally, the ship’s conference centre will host scientific meetings, lectures and media production.

Key technical enhancements include five hangar gantry cranes, pelagic trawling capabilities and a moonpool for stable ocean access.

The DSV Aurelia, the world’s deepest-diving acrylic submarine, will allow for manned explorations down to 2,200 metres. Complementing this, the ROV Aurora, with its Borealis tether system, boasts a depth range of 6,000 metres, providing access to 98% of the ocean.

An Airbus ACH145 helicopter will further support exploration and resupply operations.
