Double Ghanaian delivery for Damen
Damen Shipyards has delivered two of its ‘next generation’ tugs, modified to carry out additional duties, to Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The commissioning ceremony has been held for the two Damen ASD Tugs 2813, Gp. Capt. Edward A.A. Awuviri and Nestor Percy Galley and both vessels will be employed to handle the range of large vessels that use the Ghanian ports of Takoradi and Tema, while also providing additional port service duties.
The pair were built at Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam and include modifications providing them with fire-fighting and oil spill response capabilities. They provide a bollard pull of 83 tonnes ahead (77 tonnes astern) from Caterpillar 3516C-HD main engines driving Kongsberg US 255 thrusters. Two Caterpillar gensets come as standard with the option for a further two.
Damen’s involvement in the region goes beyond just supplying the two vessels, however, the Dutch shipbuilder having a long and productive history working with ports on Africa’s west coast together with its local partner Krane International Limited and includes a full-time service hub in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
The Netherlands-based shipbuilder’s relationship with GPHA stretches back more than 20 years and part of the package includes training at Damen’s Gorinchem headquarters, not only for the tugs’ masters and crew, but also the shoreside technicians and engineers who will maintain the vessels.
The standard specification for the ASD Tug 2813 indicates a sturdy vessel capable of its BV-classed Unrestricted Service notation with MLC 2006-compliant accommodation provided for 10 persons on main and forecastle deck levels. Towing over either bow or stern is via optional winches on the fore and aft decks.
Damen is experiencing continued success with this example of its ‘next generation’ tug series since the first two examples were delivered to Singapore clients in 2019. More than 30 have been delivered to date globally, with building slots indicated for around 20 more.
