Electric hydrofoil ferry begins operations in Berlin

The innovative P-12 is joining the Funkhaus/Reederei Riedel fleet, connecting the East Side Gallery to Funkhaus Berlin, a stretch of some 5 kilometres over the Spree River.

Said to be the world’s first hydrofoil ferry, the P-12 glides above the water, reducing drag and cutting travel times. Candela reports energy-savings of 400% compared with traditional ships and a 50% reduction in operating costs over conventional diesel vessels.

“Our innovative P-12 is the world’s first high-speed and long-range electric shuttle ship,” said the company. “It redefines urban waterborne transportation.”

The P-12 is available in several different arrangements – Shuttle, Voyager and Business – suited for different use cases.

The ferry has a length of 11.99 metres, beam of 4.5 metres and weighs 10 tonnes. It can carry up to 30 passengers with a range of 40 nautical miles at a service speed of 25 knots.

The innovative technology comprises the C-POD motor, C-Foil System and the proprietary Flight Controller software. The C-POD features two compact permanent magnet motors powered by four 63kWh batteries.

All Candela vessels use fully submerged hydrofoils in a specific configuration – one large, straight main foil close to the centre of gravity and a smaller foil in the aft, attached to the propulsion unit.

The foil systems are retractable for trailing, storage and shallow water operation.
