Hydrogen fuel cell powers emissions-free future

ABB has unveiled a 3MW hydrogen fuel cell system, marking a major step towards alternative fuels for both the leisure and commercial marine sectors.

Integrated into the newly launched 118.8-metre Feadship Breakthrough superyacht, the multi-megawatt hydrogen fuel cell technology works in tandem with ABB’s Onboard DC Grid and Azipod propulsion units.

This combination delivers near-silent vessel power, emission-free propulsion in harbours and in marine protected marine zones.

“For ABB, this order represents a breakthrough in the integration of marine fuel cells with propulsion systems,” said Riccardo Repetto, Global Vessel Type Responsible, Yachts, ABB Marine & Ports.

Wider implications

While Breakthrough is a private superyacht, the technology has significant implications for the wider maritime industry.

By proving that hydrogen fuel cells can provide continuous hotel load, silent anchorage for up to a week and efficient propulsion at 10 knots, the system offers a scalable solution for commercial vessel operators seeking greener alternatives.

The vessel’s advanced integration includes ABB’s Power and Energy Management System PEMS, Marine Pilot Control for precise maneouvring and shipside shore connection technology.

Together, these systems help maximise efficiency while minimising emissions and vibrations, helping demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cells can be a viable alternative to conventional marine fuels.
