Hydrogen on the horizon for new-build Norwegian ferry

Alternative-fuelled

Built by Austal, Horizon X is designed to support alternative fuels and marks a step towards lower-emission, high-speed ferry operations.

The ferry will be the first commercial installation of Kongsberg Maritime’s new S-4L series, integrating two S160-S4L waterjets and two S100-S4LB booster units.

Kongsberg’s system combines features from the company’s established S3 and S4 platforms to deliver enhanced manoeuvrability, operational efficiency and durability for large high-speed vessels.

Engineering upgrades include a dual bucket and steering nozzle arrangement to improve low-speed handling and docking, reducing turnaround times and fuel consumption.

The units are built from duplex stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance and maintain a mean time between overhaul of 25,000 hours, or five years.
