Intermarine delivers eco-friendly high-speed ferry
Intermarine has delivered a new high-speed ferry to the SNAV shipping company.
Designed by the Intermarine research centre in Messina in Italy, the SNAV Sirius will be used for short sea crossings in the Bay of Naples.
Intermarine, part of the Immsi industrial group and SNAV, part of MSC Group, share many years of experience in the maritime sector and are collaborating on new initiatives especially for passengers with reduced mobility.
While the new boat is similar in size to the SNAV Orion, which has been in service for a number of years in the Bay of Naples, it has been completely upgraded.
Minimising environmental impact was a key factor in designing the craft, say the two companies, hence its lightweight aluminium construction and range of state-of-the-art technologies.
The propulsion system consists of four engines and three IMO III type-approved generators (Marpol Convention) for electric combustion control, fitted with a selective catalytic reduction system for significant emissions reduction.
The engines and the generators can also be powered with biofuel, the use of which contributes to a well-to-wake emissions reduction of up to 90%.
The boat is also equipped with a cold ironing dock socket for shore-to-ship energy supply, and can accommodate a hybrid propulsion system for zero-emission port entry and exit manoeuvres.
