Lloyds Type Approval for hydrogen fuel cell system

PowerCell’s Marine System 225 has received Type Approval from Lloyd’s Register, helping advance the use of hydrogen for vessel propulsion and alternative fuels at sea.

The approval confirms that the Marine System 225 meets rigorous international standards for safety, performance and design.

For PowerCell, it marks a significant step toward decarbonising the maritime industry through hydrogen fuel cell technology.

“The maritime industry is undergoing a profound transformation with dynamic changes and technologies like hydrogen fuel cells will play a crucial role in shaping its sustainable future,” said Claudene Sharp-Patel, global technical director at Lloyd’s Register.

“We are pleased to support this advancement in zero-emission propulsion.”

Workboat focused

PowerCell’s system delivers 225 kW of clean, efficient power specifically geared towards marine transportation and workboat propulsion.

Its compact, modular design allows easy integration into both new and retrofitted vessels such as ferries, patrol vessels and offshore support vessels (OSVs).

For smaller vessels on fixed routes, hydrogen fuel cells can serve as the primary means of vessel propulsion, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and reducing harmful local pollutants like SOx and NOx.

“This Type Approval is not just a technical milestone,” said Lisa Kylhammar, SVP engineering at PowerCell Group.

“It’s a clear signal to the maritime industry that hydrogen fuel cell systems are safe, viable and ready for commercial deployment, it simplifies the path to zero-emission vessel design and accelerates the transition to sustainable shipping.”

PowerCell said that the Marine System 225 closely aligns with international decarbonisation goals, including the IMO’s GHG strategy and the EU’s Fit for 55 package.

It will be showcased at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam from June 24 to 26.
