Prominent UK port adds first foiling pilot to fleet
Artemis Technologies has sold its EF-12 electric foiling pilot boat to one of the UK’s most prominent deep-sea ports.
The vessel will be the Port of Tyne fleet’s first fully electric foiling vessel in what it says is a significant milestone.
Built in Belfast, the EF-12 was piloted on the River Thames during London Shipping Week in 2023.
“As the first UK port to adopt this ground-breaking technology, we’re not only improving standards of safety and efficiency but also delivering a more sustainable operation in support of the government’s Maritime 2050 Strategy,” said the port’s CEO, Matt Beeton.
”The collaboration showcases the potential of maritime innovation and technology to meet the demands of a cleaner maritime future,” said Artemis Technologies CEO Iain Percy.
Artemis Technologies scooped three awards for its eFoiling technology at the Seawork commercial marine show in 2022, for Maritime Sustainability, Vessel Build & Design and Spirit of Innovation.
The vessel is due to be delivered to the Port of Tyne, which will form the base for the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm, at the moment set to be the largest in the world.
The deep-sea port is in the northeast of England and a gateway to the city of Newcastle, and its dedicated container terminal handles 100,000TEU a year as well as bulk commodities.
It is also the UK’s second largest car exporter, with customers including Nissan and Volkswagen.
