Strengthened protocols for firefighting tugs
A new industry guide on the use of tugs in firefighting has been launched to strengthen marine safety and emergency response protocols.
Unveiled at the British Tugowners Association (BTA) Annual Conference in Belfast, the ’Use of Tugs in Firefighting’ guide is the first UK-specific resource of its kind, offering vital direction for tug operators on effective firefighting and towing procedures.
“The launch of our inaugural guide on the Use of Tugs in Firefighting represents a pivotal moment for maritime safety and emergency preparedness. This guide not only addresses the unique challenges posed by alternatively fuelled vessels but also sets a new standard for industry practices,” said Nick Jeffrey, chair, BTA.
“We are proud to offer this comprehensive resource to tug operators, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and protocols necessary to protect lives, property, and the environment in the face of maritime emergencies.”
Critical role
The aim of the guide is to enhance training, towing operations and fire response effectiveness across the UK fleet.
Recent incidents, including the Stena Immaculate and Solong allision in the Humber, underscore the critical role of firefighting tugs. In that case, tugs helped contain the resulting fire, minimising environmental damage, despite the tragic loss of one seafarer.
With over 200 shipboard fires reported globally in 2023 and a rise in vessels powered by alternative fuels like lithium-ion batteries and ammonia, the guide addresses a growing demand for practical and specialised firefighting protocols.
Developed with contributions from industry leaders including Lloyd’s Register and UK Harbour Masters, the guide complies with SOLAS and the Merchant Shipping Act.
