Turkey leaps forward in tug electrification
Sanmar Shipyards has begun construction on four new electric tugs for Turkey’s state-owned BOTAŞ Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, marking a milestone in the electrification of tug fleets.
A steel cutting ceremony has taken place at Sanmar’s Altinova Shipyard, launching the build of four battery-powered tugs based on the ElectRA 2500-SX design by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd.
“The world is transitioning to environmentally friendly fuels and electric drive systems are the most suitable solution for tugboats,” said Cem Seven, Vice Chairman of Sanmar Shipyards.
”We are proud to contribute to BOTAŞ’s sustainable approach with these ElectRA tugs, which align with the International Maritime Organization’s net-zero goals for 2050.”
Crucial function
The two parties are jointly starting the manufacturing process of the tugboats, which will be used in the maneuvers of LNG carriers that will berth at BOTAŞ Marmara Ereğlisi LNG Terminal and BOTAŞ Saros FSRU Terminal.
The tugs will feature 5,085 kWh battery banks, a bollard pull of 70 tonnes and additional diesel gensets for backup.
“This project not only strengthens our energy security but also represents a vital step towards a fossil fuel-free maritime industry. We believe these electric tugs will contribute to a cleaner future,” said Erdinç Deli, LNG Operations Manager, BOTAŞ.
