Vard supplies second hybrid OECV for Island Offshore

Vard has secured a contract with Island Offshore to design and build a second hybrid-powered ocean energy construction vessel (OECV).

This agreement follows the exercise of an option from a previous contract signed in May, which included one firm OECV and options for two additional sister vessels.

Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2027, the new vessel will be based on the VARD 3 25 design, developed in collaboration with Island Offshore.

The vessel will be 120 metres long with a 25-metre beam and is designed to support a range of subsea operations, including inspection, maintenance, and repair, pipe laying, subsea infrastructure construction, installation, and diving support.

Key features of the vessel include a 250-tonne heave-compensated offshore subsea crane, accommodation for 130 people, and a 1.7 MWh energy storage system for hybrid propulsion.

It will also have a heat recovery system for enhanced energy efficiency and be prepared for alternative low-emission fuel. Additionally, the vessel will be equipped with two launch and recovery systems for remote operations and be ready for walk-to-work gangway use, making it ideal for renewable energy projects such as cable laying and trenching in the offshore wind, and oil and gas sectors.

Vard and Island Offshore have a longstanding partnership, with Vard having previously delivered 41 vessels to the group.
