Admiralty helps shipping industry plan ahead

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) will host the next chain of Digital Integration Workshops in London this month, to help shipping managers plan for the integration of digital technology into bridge operations.

Captain Paul Hailwood

The UKHO makets a range of navigational products and services globally under the Admiralty brand.

The workshops, which are free to attend, will help the shipping industry comply with IMO compulsory carriage of ECDIS legislation which came into force on 1 July 2012. They have been designed with help from Captain Paul Hailwood, an expert on ECDIS, and are based on insights from shipping companies who have successfully shifted to digital. The aim of the workshops is to provide managers with a clear checklist of activity for each key stage of the transitions, from the initial risk assessment to the introduction and running of new procedures.

Captain Hailwood said, “Many companies underestimate how long the transition to digital navigation will take. It’s crucial that they make every effort to fully understand what ECDIS compliance requires. I’ve worked with many companies where the process has taken twice as long as first thought, resulting in a variety of operational issues. To avoid these problems shipping companies need definitive answers about the integration process to enable them to prepare effectively.”

The workshops are part of Admiralty’s Digital Navigation Insights campaign to help the maritime industry meet strategic and operational challenges.

The workshops will take place at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Kensington, London on 24 September 2012. Following London, the workshops will also be held in Hong Kong on 30 October and in Dubai on 27 to 29 November.
