German – Spanish cooperation
MTU Ibérica, a subsidiary of the German propulsion solution specialist MTU Friedrichshafen, and the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia have opened a common training centre at Cartagena in Spain.
It is part of a strategic long term cooperation between both companies. Navantia has chosen MTU Friedrichshafen as a primary partner for its ships’ propulsion systems. There are existing license agreements for the commercialisation and manufacturing of MTU Series 396, Series 956 and Series 1163 marine engines.
The new training centre is prepared for different applications like naval, commercial marine, and power generation, providing training for customers, technicians and service dealers of MTU and Navantia on the maintenance and operation of diesel engines as well as electronic monitoring and control systems. The centre is integrated into MTUs worldwide service network with a number of training facilities.
An example of vessels built by Navantia and powered by MTU engines are the Spanish Meteoro Class offshore patrol vessel.
