Electric outboard takes top award at METS
German based electric outboard manufacturer, Torqeedo, has won the DAME Award for its new 80 hp electric outboard system Deep Blue, at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS), taking place this week in Amsterdam.
The company won the award on the same day its new system was first presented at the show. The DAME award is given for the boating industry’s most important innovation for the coming year and recognises innovative research and development.
Torqeedo’s CEO, Dr Christoph Ballin, said: “Commercial users with petrol costs over €4,500 per annum can start saving money today with the change from petrol to electric motors. The fact that the electric motors are naturally environmentally friendlier and future-oriented, as well as much quieter, is a bonus.”
The 325 volt DC system offers commercial operators and green boaters greater power and range. Lithium batteries have been used to increase safety and come with a nine year capacity guarantee. The system also features an onboard computer that uses GPS to determine remaining range and displays travel time.
Because battery costs are independent of the amount of usage, the system is being offered to commercial users and sold via manufacturers that take on installation during production.
According to Torqeedo, it has received interest from boat manufacturers in Europe and the USA.
