Van Oord awarded Perkpolder development contract
Dutch dredging contractor, Van Oord, has been awarded the contract for the Perkpolder area development project in the Netherlands.
The Perkpolder project has been commissioned by Dutch public works agency, RWS, who Van Oord works with on a regular basis. The project involves a new nature area situated outside the protection zone of the dikes in the Westerscheldt estuary in southwest Netherlands.
Under the contract, which is worth more than €12m, Van Oord will block in the site of the old ferry docks which will be raised to 10m above sea level, construct new dikes and adapt existing ones to begin work on the new nature area.
A spokesperson from Van Oord told Maritime Journal: “Mainly dry infrastructural equipment will be used including several crane barges and pontoon Weert.”
The end results will be an ecologically valuable nature area and landscape for residential and recreational use. The aim of the project is to improve the features of the Westerscheldt estuary and to boost the local economy which has suffered since the cancellation of the Kruiningen to Perkpolder ferry service in 2003.
Van Oord is expected to complete the work in 2015.
