MCA approves Videotel’s ECDIS training
UK based maritime training company, Videotel Marine International, has received Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approval for its CBT ECDIS training course.
Videotel’s modular training course is designed for deck officers to use as part of their compulsory Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) training. Using interactive computer based training (CBT), officers can learn the principles and fundamentals of ECDIS capability and operation.
The course will also teach them of the limitations of ECDIS and the dangers of over reliance.
Nigel Cleave, CEO, Videotel, told Maritime Journal: “As the first of the mandatory ECDIS deadlines have passed, the move to digital navigation is now gathering momentum. Although proper implementation and use of ECDIS does provide challenges, through proper training and with appropriate company procedures in place, the benefits far outweigh the risks.”
He added: “As a provider of maritime training globally it was essential that we provided the highest quality ECDIS training – our customers demanded it and the marketplace expected it. We are delighted that our endeavours have been recognised with MCA approval.”
Users will also have the opportunity to progress to an ECDIS Training Consortium (ECT) centre for generic and type specific simulator training. This can also be carried out online at a later stage.
