Briggs scores £50m ferry contract
Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Scotland’s Briggs Marine and Environmental Services a seven year £50m contract to operate and maintain the Woolwich Ferry service commencing on 1 April 2013.
Under the agreement, Briggs will also take responsibility for the Woolwich Ferry’s existing workforce, taking the company’s headcount to well over 600.
Briggs will work with London River Services (LRS), a subsidiary of TfL, and will be responsible for the daily operation of the service, which links Woolwich and North Woolwich and the north and south circular roads across the River Thames. It will also maintain the ferries James Newman, John Burns and Ernest Bevin, as well as the landside infrastructure.

The Woolwich ferry link has been in operation since 1889, it carries around 20,000 vehicles and 50,000 passengers weekly – just over 1m vehicles and 2.6m passengers per year.
