Holland America rescues yacht
Holland America Line’s ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ has rescued two men from sailing yacht, ‘Embla’, after receiving a call from the US Coast Guard rescue coordination centre in Norfolk, Virginia, regarding the yacht’s mayday call.
When it received the call on 4 May at 6:50 pm, Nieuw Amsterdam was approximately 600 miles east of Bermuda on its trans-Atlantic crossing to Europe, around 35 miles south-southwest of the yacht.
Richard Meadows, executive vice president of sales, marketing and guest programmes at Holland America Line, said: “It is a time honoured law of the sea that any ship in the vicinity should render assistance to a vessel in distress that has issued a call for help.”
The two men will disembark Nieuw Amsterdam in the next port of call at the Azores.
