Baltic outlook positive

Both the global and EU economy is set to pick up speed slowly over the course of the next year according to a report from Finland’s Centre for Maritime Studies.

The Baltic Port Index (BPI) provides a general overview of regional ports’ expectations for the upcoming year in the Baltic Sea, showing it has risen slightly since last year. The BPI indicates a more positive than negative outlook for 2014 within the port sector.

More than half of the Barometer respondents believe in moderate economic growth in the Baltic Sea region in 2014. The positive expectations for cargo volume development exceed those for general economic development. Two thirds of the respondent ports expect some growth in cargo volumes. Fewer Baltic ports anticipate their investment activity to increase next year, with only a third forseeing growth.
