Meerwind start
The Seajacks installation vessels, Leviathan and Zaratan, are making progress at the Meerwind Offshore Wind Park, a 288MW windfarm in the Exclusive Economic Zone region of the German North Sea.
Seajacks is main installation contractor for the construction of Meerwind. When fully operational, the eighty 3.6MW Siemens turbines will produce enough energy to power 400,000 households every year.
As main installation contractor, Seajacks is also managing the application of scour protection at the eighty turbine locations. The rock material is loaded from quarries in Norway and applied in two stages, the filter layer and armour layer. This protection prevents hydrodynamic erosion to the monopile base, which could result in severe damage to the turbine structure.
The filter layer is installed pre-monopile and contains the smallest size rocks with an average diameter of 60mm per rock. Approximately 2,700 tonnes of filter layer rock will be deposited per location, a total of 216,000 tonnes across the entire windfarm.
