Swathe MBES and laser training
Swathe Services is set to run a £2000 multi-beam echosounder (MBES) and MDL laser scanning training course next year in response to “rising demand for MBES surveys within the industry”.
Training will be given by James Williams of Swathe Services and Jesper Højdal of Hydrocharting, using SONIC 2020 and SONIC 2024 MBES alongside an MDL Dynascan laser scanning system, followed by data processing using QPS QINSy software.
A spokesperson for Swath Services told Maritime Journal: “We hope to educate and train people within the industry on the R2SONIC multi-beam system, which when used in conjunction with an MDL Dynascan laser scanning system, can provide data both under and above water saving both time and money on surveys.”
“With just a MBES system surveyors would have to wait for the tide to both be in and out to do the inspection, but with a MBES and laser scanning system it can be done with as one survey,” they added.
Using QINSy software, bathymetric data and above water land survey data can be analysed as one, producing a “homogenous point cloud”. This significantly reduces survey times and cost and enables full scanning to be carried out where rocky outcrops, reefs or lack of landing facilities would previously have made surveying impossible.
It can be used for a wide range of inspection works, including offshore windfarm and wind turbine inspection, dredging related engineering and port and harbour inspection.
The training course offers hands-on training with high specification hydrographic survey equipment with three days boat based training and two days post processing.
The five day course will be held in Southampton, UK, from 27 January 2014 to 31 January 2014.
