Maintenance catamarans for Plymouth
Docking Solutions is nearing completion of the first of four maintenance catamarans for Plymouth’s naval dockyard, Devonport.
The vessels, which have been designed for “easy access”, consist of a 9.5m long pontoon platform and a three-tier aluminium tower structure. They will enable the dockyard to easily maintain and re-paint vessels during periods of re-fit.
Haley Williams, company administrator, Dockyard Solutions, said to Maritime Journal: The design requirement we had was to provide a safe working platform with three tiers, the rafts had to be tow-able and be able to withstand high berthing loads and harsh environments.”
“This is a first of this kind that we have designed and built, they consist of rigid tubular steel floatation platforms and measures 10m by 6m and stands at 6m high,” they added.
Docking Solutions says the catamarans will help Devonport save time and money, giving the dockyard instant and easy access to perform maintenance while Royal Navy vessels are in dock.
The company is providing the dockyard with four in total, with the first scheduled for delivery at the beginning of September.
