Gondan newbuild oceanographic vessel

The new vessel will replace the present oceanographic vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen. Designed by the Norwegian firm Skipsteknisk AS, it will measure 74. m length and 17.4m in breadth.

When completed, the vessel will perform oceanographic and hydrographic functions, marine biology, biomass analysis, geological and student training duties, among others. It will also be able to launch and recover buoys for data collection, ROV and AUV operations, as well as logistics and cargo handling operations. The vessel is also intended to operate in joint missions with scientific institutions of developing countries.

Astilleros Gondan has a 75 year history and a reputation for high quality commercial shipbuilding, with a record of some 200 vessels. It got into tug building in 2005 and since then the yard has built four sophisticated Voith escort tugs and an innovative Voith powered offshore supply ship for Ostensjo Rederi. Gondan has also constructed two terminal tugs for Fratelli Neri, which were the first ASDs to be constructed at the yard.
