Jan De Nul completes Maltese dredging
Jan De Nul has completed an extensive dredging project across Malta Freeport Terminals’ facilities within the Maltese Port of Marsaxlokk, according to local media reports.
The project involved the development of a number of port facilities, for which Jan De Nul used a modern cutter suction dredger.
It is understood the work included the dredging of the port’s inner and outer fairway, the inner turning circle, basin manoeuvring area and the approaches of terminal two in both North and south quays. Further dredging was carried out at the northern quay of terminal one.
Media reports that all areas were dredged to a depth of 17m to allow for a maximum keel berthing draught of -16m. Malta Freeport Terminals says this will enable it to handle extra-large Triple-E 18,000 teu vessels.
In compliance with Malta’s environmental authorities, all dredging works were closely monitored to ensure all regulations were met.
Apparently, a number of infrastructural developments were also carried out to prepare the terminal for the arrival of much larger vessels. This included the extension of terminal two North quay and the installation of rails, bollards and a fendering system.
The P3 alliance, which consists of shipping majors Maersk Line, MSC and CMA CGM, already selecting Malta Freeport as one of their port hubs in the Mediterranean, shipping traffic is already set to increase significantly.
