Coatings firm wins UK Navy contract
Monitor Coatings Ltd has been awarded a contract by the UK’s Royal Navy to provide a non-skid thermal gas wash resistant deck coating for the carrier decks of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.
The deck coating chosen for the vessels had to be able to withstand the aerothermal environment and gas wash exhaust system of the engines of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Eurofighter aircraft.
Monitor Coatings Ltd had to develop new techniques required for large scale preparation and application a Thermal Metal Spray System (TMS) over a deck area in excess of 19,500m2.
The company is part of Castolin Eutectic which provides wear protection services for aerospace, oil & gas, steel, among other industries.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is the largest vessel ever built for the British Royal Navy and was baptised by HRH Queen Elizabeth in July 2014.
