MORL completes offshore meteorological installation

Moray Offshore Renewables (MORL) has completed the installation of its meteorological mast in its offshore wind zone in Scotland, marking the start of its Moray Firth offshore wind generation project.

The mast measures wind conditions to enable optimal planning and operation of the Telford, Stevenson and MacColl offshore windfarms, for which the Scottish government granted consent for deployment of up to 116MW earlier this year.

“This marks a major milestone in project progress. We have benefitted from the use of innovative installation techniques which are driving forward both cost reduction, and improvements in health and safety,” said Dan Finch, project director, MORL.

Drace Infrastructuras, a division of ACS Corporation, was the main contractor for the overall fabrication and installation of the met mast and associated apparatus. Global Energy subsidiary Isleburn was subcontracted to undertake fabrication of the mast at its Invergordon facility in Easter Ross, and to undertake installation from the same port.

“The involvement of Drace and Global Energy has brought new entrants to the offshore wind supply chain, delivered new investment to the UK and demonstrated new and innovative techniques that can be used in full-scale offshore wind deployment,” added Mr Finch.

MORL is a joint venture between EDP Renewables and Repsol Nuevas Energias UK Limited. Its aim is to develop offshore wind generation in the outer Moray Firth, with up to 62 turbines of 6MW and 8MW capacity on each three offshore windfarms (Telford, Stevenson and MacColl).
