Dutch invention recognised

The Wim Timmers Designer Award has been presented to Emiel Mobron, a student at Delft University of Technology for his evaluation method for wind propulsion on cargo vessels.

With ever rising fuel prices and increasingly strict regulations for emissions, the subject of sail propulsion onboard cargo vessels is gaining attention. Although there are plenty of ideas and designs for sailing systems, there is a lack of sufficient knowledge of and insight into the main measurements of the sailing hull shape; shorter vessels have lower construction costs but a higher resistance, while slimmer hull shapes may sail better but at a cost. What is the best option and how can a return be made on the investment in the rigging? The fact is that everyone wants to save on fuel without paying more for the privilege. To answer these questions, Emiel Mobron worked on the existing Dykstra naval architects Ecoliner project, combining existing design methods applying them to variations in hull shape, based on a single type of rigging and cargo.

Dykstra naval architects says Mobron’s findings will be used to improve the design. So far however, no Ecoliner has yet been ordered.
