Vattenfall wins concession for Horns Rev 3
Vattenfall Wind Power has won the concession to build the offshore windfarm Horns Rev 3 off the Danish west coast and is just waiting for approval from the Danish Parliament and EU.
The windfarm has a total capacity of 400MW and will produce electricity for 450,000 households from 2017. It is an important step towards both Denmark’s and the EU’s goals to achieve 30% of total energy consumption coming from renewable energy sources by 2020.
Magnus Hall, CEO, Vattenfall, said that the large offshore windfarm will affect Vattenfall’s ambitions concerning wind power and especially our focus on offshore windfarms.
He said: “Today we are the second largest operator of offshore wind power farms in the world and one of the largest operators of onshore wind power in Denmark. That gives us even better ways and means to develop sustainable energy production to become both profitable and competitive in benefit of the Danish consumers.”
The concession for Horns Rev 3 will provide Vattenfall with a unique opportunity for synergies between several offshore windfarms, said Alberto Mendez Rebollo, head of Vattenfall Nordic Wind Power operations.
Vattenfall’s control centre in Esbjerg monitors more than 1000 wind turbines both offshore and onshore and Horns Rev 3 and will play a more important role as a chain of support when Horns Rev 3 goes into operation.
When it comes to offshore, Vattenfall owns a 60% stake of the Horns Rev 1 windfarm which consists of 80 wind turbines. It is currently also building two offshore windfarms in the German part of the Nordic Sea together with Stadtwerke München – Dan Tysk and Sandbank. In addition, it’s developing the Kentish Flats windfarm in the UK.
