Canadian rack-mounted computers for Europe
Produced by MarineNav in Canada, a new X1 range of rack-mounted computers using commercial processors and claimed to be 60% faster and more reliable than other comparable systems, is now being marketed throughout Europe by Hampshire-based Eurotask.
Specifically designed to withstand harsh marine environments and suitable for a wide range of hydrographic and other applications, the ruggedised standard system features 8GB RAM, a 120GB Solid State Drive, 1TB of Hard Drive and an Intel HD video card together with numerous ports, audio in/out and expansion slots. A fanless version designed to reduce operational noise is also available.
Eurotask’s Mark Luffingham says the X1 carries a two-year warranty and includes a Windows 7 64bit operating system licence. It has a quoted price tag of €2,109 excluding VAT with the fanned version costing around an extra €250.
Also being marketed for hydrographic and scientific use is MarineNav’s Leviathan 19 system, a more powerful purpose-designed 19-inch assembly with multiple layers of built-in redundancy and a secondary drive for additional backup. With dual internal 500 GB hard drives and facilities for high performance dual video output as well as an internal secure USB port, quoted unit cost is around €5,000 plus VAT.
