CEDA preparing energy efficiency guidance
The Netherlands based Central Dredging Association’s CEDA Environment Commission (CEC) has set up a Working Group specifically to prepare a CEDA information paper on energy efficiency in relation to sustainability.
Energy plays a role throughout the life cycle of dredging projects and decisions taken early in the project initiation can have a huge impact on later energy consumption. Also, legislation relating to emissions and sustainability is becoming stricter. Therefore, the CEDA Working Group Energy Efficiency (WGEE) aims to produce a paper giving the reader a structured insight into energy efficiency by providing an overview of the perspectives of the various stakeholders.
“Each dredging project has its unique set of soil and rock conditions, volumes, water depths and transport distances, among others, said Paul Vercruijsse of DEME Belgium, who is chairing the working group. “Projects are often located close to or in the confined space of busy port areas. Giving all these factors’ impact on energy consumption and upcoming developments in legislation, it is a challenge to define and evaluate the energy efficiency of a project.”
The nine working group members, who come from varied backgrounds, brought together their collective expertise at a first meeting at CEDA headquarters in Delft, where they finalised terms of reference and began work. Their plan is to publish the information paper by mid-2019.
