Dalrymple Award for ABP hydrographic manager
William Heaps, assistant marine advisor and hydrographic manager of Associated British Ports Group at Southampton, is the recipient of this year’s UK Hydrographic Office Alexander Dalrymple Award.
The prestigious annual Award is dedicated to the memory of Alexander Dalrymple who established the Hydrographic Office in 1795 and is a symbol of recognition for outstanding dedication and contribution to world hydrography.
Presenting the Award during a recent ‘Blue Economy’ seminar at Southampton’s National Oceanography Cenre, UKHO chief executive Ian Moncrieff said it marked recognition of William’s outstanding work on behalf of ABP as port surveyor and hydrographic manager of the organisation’s 22 ports and harbours. As a specialist in Port Marine Safety, he provides expert guidance to harbour masters within the Group which is heavily reliant upon world shipping, the former national hydrographer added.
The award also acknowledged other areas of William Heaps’ endeavours as a former chairman of the Hydrographic Society UK as well as UK representative and sometime head of the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies (IFHS) in addition to notable contributions to numerous hydrographic seminars and conferences.
