EMGS launches worlds first EM survey vessel
Electromagnetic Geoservices ASA (EMGS) of Trondheim, Norway has launched the worlds first purpose built EM survey vessel, Boa Thalassa to enhance its global hydrocarbon exploration activities.
Built by Bergen Group Fosen and leased on long term charter from Boa Offshore, the vessel will lead the way in new generation 3D EM surveying technology, said Terje Eidesmo, CEO of EMGS, who added that its improved imaging potential is now being increasingly sought by oil and gas majors for accelerating traditional exploration processes.
In addition to new onboard processing systems for improving the quality and delivery time for EM data, Boa Thalassa‘s facilities include sheltered deck and work spaces, a helipad, a hospital ward, conference facilities, a gym and modern workstations with broadband connection.
Among present worldwide commitments, EMGS is shortly due to carry out a series of 3D surveys to assess several hydrocarbon prospects offshore of Malaysia under a contract reportedly worth some $7.5m. The prospects will be targeted by towing an EM source over receivers placed 1 to 2km apart in a grid. Resulting EM data will then be processed to create resistivity maps and volumes to produce a much clearer and more complete understanding of sub-surfaces as well as improved estimations of hydrocarbon reserves.
