Inyanga Marine Energy has been awarded a further 10MW for its tidal energy project at Morlais in Anglesey, Wales, during the sixth round of the UK government’s Contracts for Difference scheme.

It is the largest tidal energy contract awarded during this phase of funding and doubles the scale of the project, which uses the company’s innovative HydroWing technology, to 20MW.

Inyanga Marine Energy Group has secured an additional 10MW for its Morlais tidal project, doubling capacity

“This allows us to build on economies of scale from our portfolio of projects to achieve commercially viable generation projects,” said Richard Parkinson, chief executive of Inyanga Marine Energy Group.

“This enhances our expansion in Anglesey and our commitment to develop the project in partnership with Menter Môn Morlais, to allow the site to reach its full potential and provide economic growth and benefit to Wales.”

The Contracts for Difference is a UK government scheme that aims to accelerate the development of new clean energy, helping the UK achieve energy security.

So far the only one of its kind in the world, the Morlais tidal energy project is run by Menter Môn Morlais. All necessary infrastructure is already in place in the zone, including a connection to the national grid and two substations on the shore.

Earlier this year, Inyanga Marine Energy announced plans to build Southeast Asia’s first ever tidal power generation plant in collaboration with Philippines-based Energies PH.
