UK marks a sustainable shipping milestone
The world’s first dual-fuelled, ammonia-powered vessel has arrived in the UK, showcasing the potential of its use in the UK.
Fortescue Green Pioneer, a Singapore-flagged vessel, docked at the Port of Southampton to demonstrate ammonia’s viability as a zero-carbon marine fuel.
The visit showcased the ship’s operational safety, regulatory compliance and provided vital crew training on ammonia-powered vessel operations.
“It’s great to welcome this pioneering, first-of-a-kind vessel to UK shores – this is exactly the kind of innovation that will drive forward decarbonisation in the shipping sector,” said Mike Kane, UK Maritime Minister.
Technology showcase
During its UK visit, the Fortescue Green Pioneer will undergo Port State Control inspections by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to ensure regulatory compliance.
After Southampton, the vessel will head to London’s West India Dock to showcase its cutting-edge technology to key stakeholders and the public.
Equipped with four-stroke engines, two of which run on ammonia and diesel, the ship marks a significant step toward maritime decarbonisation.
“We have brought the Fortescue Green Pioneer to the UK to deliver a simple message: This vessel encapsulates the innovation and character that has defined Fortescue’s mission to lead the world beyond fossil fuels,” said Dr Andrew Forrest, executive chairman and founder, Fortescue.
As the International Maritime Organization prepares to finalise guidelines on ammonia as fuel, the Fortescue Green Pioneer calling offers a clear glimpse into a cleaner, more sustainable future for global shipping.
