Hybrid tug design advances offshore capability
Spanish shipbuilder Gondan Shipbuilders has contracted Finnish propulsion specialist Steerprop to supply hybrid-capable azimuth units for a high-performance hybrid tug.
The 150-tonne bollard pull vessel, destined for Østensjø Rederi, is the first tug from naval architect Skipsteknisk. It’s designed for demanding offshore towage and DP2 dynamic positioning operations.
“The newbuild represents a major step in further strengthening our offshore towage fleet and will be our flagship in the tug segment, achieving the highest possible efficiency through a hybrid propulsion configuration tailored to its operating profile,” said Kristain Helland Vea, CEO of Østensjø Rederi.
Dual-end propulsion
The contract represents Steerprop’s first collaboration with GONDAN Shipbuilders and renews its partnership with Østensjø Rederi following close cooperation during the vessel design phase.
As per the contract, Steerprop will deliver dual-end versions of its SP 50 W D propulsors, the most powerful ducted units the company has supplied, enabling flexible main propulsion via diesel engine, electric motor, or a combined configuration.
The compact propulsor arrangement supports greater flexibility in vessel design, particularly within complex hybrid configurations, while reducing installation footprint.
A robust mechanical propeller drive and fixed-pitch propeller concept underpin operational reliability, a critical requirement in offshore environments where uninterrupted vessel availability is essential.
The dual-end configuration enables connection to two power sources, with electric propulsion expected to cover most operating profiles and diesel power supplementing when higher bollard pull is required.
Steerprop worked hard to expand its reach in different markets last year nurturing close working relationships with shipyards including Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and Seaspan Shipyards.
