First user for new Primar online service
The Norwegian Hydrographic Service’ s PRIMAR organisation, which currently provides over 8,000 electronic nautical charts globally via an international network of distributors, has recorded its first commercial user for its new ECDIS online updating facility with adoption by Vingtor, a high speed ferry operating daily between Bergen and Stavanger.
Equipped with an Adveto ECDIS 4000 system linked to GPRS-3G with data speeds of 384 kbit/s or more, the vessel now receives real-time updates direct from PRIMAR’s database within minutes of release of information from a hydrographic office, so reducing onboard navigational workloads. Activation follows successful trials over the last year or so with Adveto, the Swedish developer of electronic navigation systems.
Gerry Larsson-Fedde, Hydrographer of Norway, says PRIMAR is now working closely with other ECDIS manufacturers to expand the recently introduced online service, which he believes will be crucial to the continued growth of ENC usage worldwide.
